不定期更新　歯のおはなし〜ライオンの歯編〜

こんにちは！三木照久歯科、院長の三木照久です。
前回の動物の歯のお話は、草食動物である「ウサギ」さんの歯についてのお話でしたね。今日は肉食動物の代表格ともいえる、ライオンの歯のお話をしたいと思います。
さてライオン。別名「百獣の王」とも言われます。何故そう呼ばれるのか？見た目の威厳であるとかオス一頭が群れを率いる様が王のようだとか…諸説ありますが、私は「単独でも食物連鎖の上位に君臨する大型ネコ科動物なのに、ましてや群れで狩りをするから」という特徴において、まさに最強…「王」の呼び名にふさわしいと思っています。
その王たるライオン、どんな歯や口を持っているんでしょうか。私も動物園で見る数メートル間隔より間近で見たことは有りませんが(もしそんな経験をしていたら、私はもういないかも知れませんね)画像で見てもこれに噛まれたら終わりだな…😱💦という印象を受けます。
細かいご説明の前に、まず犬歯。ライオンのそれは、4.3〜5.2cm…上下足すと10cmにも達することがあるということですね。インパラの首も捉えられるほど開くライオンの口なら、ヒトの首なんて優に挟めますね。もしライオンがヒトの首を本気で噛んだら…植木鋏で枝をパチンと切るのと同程度のことなのかも知れません。
そして、前後や左右には動きません。蝶番運動(上下的開閉)のみ…まさにハサミやドアのように扇状にのみ動き、左右には動きません。その理由は、捉えた獲物をしっかりと固定することで、顎が不安定に動いて逃すことがないようにするためです。例えていうと、「罠」と同じような構造になっているということです。
「臼歯」と名のつく、いわゆる奥歯は有りますが…前歯はもちろん奥歯さえ鋭利に尖っており、草食や雑食動物のような、箱型に近いすり潰すための形状のものは一本もありません。前歯から奥歯に至るまで、ほぼ全てが「牙」状になっています。横に動かないので、すり潰すこと自体できません。すり鉢やグラインダーや臼は無く、鋭く刺して捕らえ、切り裂く刃物ばかりが揃っているということですね。葉や木の枝を直接摂ることがないので、すり潰す必要がないためと考えられます。噛む力は、最大で400kg！に達するそうです。
舌にも特徴があり、舌乳頭が発達しています。舌乳頭とは、舌の表面のザラザラのことで…これが発達していることで、骨にこびりついた肉を舐め取るのに適しています。
これらの特徴からライオンの口は、極論すれば「全ては肉のために」という機能を有していると言えます。
「だから肉食獣なんじゃないか」と言われればそうなんですが…じゃあライオン達は、野菜を摂っていないのか❓…ではありません。むしろ彼らの一番のご馳走は野菜…と言っても過言ではありません。
ライオンは獲物の草食動物を捕らえると、まずハラワタ(内臓)から食べます。胃や腸といった消化器系には、草食動物がその発達した臼歯ですり潰し、さらには胃で消化して…すり潰す歯を持たない肉食獣でも…吸収しやすくなった植物が入っています。
さらに他の臓器にも、その植物から吸収された様々な栄養が含まれています。こうして草食の獲物のハラワタを食べる(人間も、レバーを食べることで鉄分を摂ったりしますね)ことで、ライオンは間接的に植物を食べて、ちゃんと「バランスのよい食事」をしているのです。
さて、私達人間の口はどうでしょう。雑食動物ですから植物も動物も食べられますが、肉を切り裂くような鋭く尖った歯は犬歯のみ、上下左右28本(親知らずを除く)中4本しか有りません。その間に有る前歯(別名 切歯)は包丁の役目で、これは口に入りきらない大きなものを適度な大きさに切るためのもの。牙とは言えません。
咀嚼のメインとなる臼歯(16本も有ります)は、全てすり潰すのに適した形状…その特徴から、肉より穀物や葉や根を食べる方が適している…と、言えるでしょう。
そして、顎の力は最大で約70kg。ライオンの1/6以下しか有りません。さらに、植物の細胞は細胞壁という頑丈な壁に包まれており、しっかりと咀嚼しないと、動物性の食べ物より消化•吸収がされにくいです。野菜で栄養を摂るには、人間の顎の弱い力でしっかりと咀嚼してすり潰す必要があるのです。
噛む力がライオンより遥かに弱く、またすり潰すための歯が牙より多い人間の口。その形態が、「動物より植物から、より多くの栄養を摂りなさい、そしてよく噛みなさい」と語っています。
この様に、他の動物と人の口の特徴を比較しても、できるだけ野菜を多く摂り、よく噛む必要があることは明らかです。
ライオンも人も…ひいては全ての動物の体は、食べた(＝咀嚼•消化•吸収できた)ものでできています。摂った食事をちゃんと健やかな体の一部にするために、「バランスのよい食事を、よく噛む」よう心がけましょう。
最後に…百獣の王ライオンといえども、自然界では歯がなくなれば終わり。お口以外の感染症も、多くはお口から侵入します。大型で最強の王者の最大の敵の一つは、ミクロの口腔内細菌…かも、知れません。
サバンナには硬い肉を挽肉やシチューにしてくれるシェフもいなければ、病気や怪我を負った歯を治してくれる歯医者もいません。歯がダメになったら、獲物を切り裂くことも食べることもできません。
かたや人間は、硬い食べ物も調理して柔らかくし、歯を治してもらうこともできます。とはいえ、我々歯医者がどれだけ技術を磨いて人工物で歯を精巧に再現しても、天然の歯より優れたものは作れません。
歯は、命を保っていくための、そして「食べる」という人生で最後まで残る楽しみのための、大切な宝物。一生自分の歯で噛んで、美しく楽しく人生を送るために。お口の健康を大切にしましょう。
