不定期更新　歯のおはなし〜ウサギの歯編〜

こんにちは！三木照久歯科、院長の三木照久です。
早いもので…今年、2023年も半年あまりが過ぎました。忙しい…をつい言い訳に、もう今年の干支を意識することも少なくなりましたが…折り返しなので振り返りますと、卯(うさぎ)年ですね。今日はちょっとウサギさんの歯についてのお話をしたいと思います。
ウサギの歯は、生涯に渡って伸び続けます。これは、野生のウサギは一生「とにかくしっかり、たくさん噛まなくてはならない」からです。
まず、樹皮や木の根などとても堅いものを食べるため。またそういったものを消化•吸収し易くするためには念入りに細かくせねばならないので、一分間で約120回も咀嚼するそうです。これらのことから、歯が常に擦り減り続けますから、それに適応するための進化として「伸び続ける」のだと考えられています(羨ましいようですが…逆に噛み合わせが悪いと正常にすり減らず、それはそれで様々な弊害があるようです。歯の悩みは、ウサギさんたちにもあるのですね…)。
一方私達人間の歯は、一生でたった2度しか生えてきません。一度虫歯や外傷で壊れたり、その他歯周病等で失われてしまった歯は、自然に治ることも生えてくることも有りません。幸い歯牙の喪失は他の臓器•器官の摘出等と違い、インプラントやブリッジで元の機能に近い状態に回復できる方法が様々ありますが…そうは言っても、いかなる治療法を用いても天然の歯には敵いません。私も何十年にわたり毎日、歯や歯周組織・口腔の治療というものに向き合ってきましたが…「(特定の宗教の話ではなく比喩的に申し上げると)神様はよくぞこんなに精巧なものを作り上げられるなぁ」、とつくづく畏怖の念を抱く次第です(歯に限らず、人体全てがそうですが…)。
さて、ウサギの寿命は7〜8年だそうです。かたや私達人間…とりわけ日本人の寿命は、100年(ふと考えると一世紀！)もそう珍しくない時代に突入しました。もし100年生きるなら、私のようなR50でもまだ人生残り半分もある若輩者ということです。道理でまだ未熟者なわけです。
長生きは…それはおめでたいけれど、もしも健康を損ね「辛いことばかりなのに、生かされているだけ」なんて感じる人生になってしまったら？こんな悲しいことはありません。どうせ長生きをする(ある意味、生きさせられる)なら、楽しく生きなきゃ損損。私はそう思います。そのためには、「できるだけ元気でいる」こと。「かけがえのない健康を大切にする」こと。これがとても大事です。
いまこの言葉を受け取って下さるあなた様も、同じようにお考えなら…お口の健康は、極めて重要です。高齢になって人混みでの長時間の買い物や旅行がちょっと難しくなっても、食べる楽しみは残ります。もし幸運なことに元気・健康でそれらが可能な方で有っても、…いや、そういう方なら尚更、お出かけの大きな楽しみの一つに美味しい食事は欠かせません。ある高齢者へのアンケートでは、「いま一番楽しいことは？」という質問に対し約半数…最多の回答を得たのは、「食べること」だったそうです。また、お口の健康状態が良い人は、「全身的な健康寿命も長い」ことが分かっています。
人生100年時代、末長く楽しく生きるために。当院とご一緒に、お口の健康回復&健康維持を実現していきましょう。
